Building a Brand: How to Create a Brand Blueprint

Let’s take a look back at what we’ve covered in this series so far:

Our next step now is to create a Brand Blueprint using your Brandstorm Worksheet as a guide. Download the print or digital PDF of the Brand Blueprint below to get started:

Start by reading through your Brandstorm Worksheet again. Without over-analyzing, omit anything that no longer rings true and highlight or bold anything that stands out as important. Next, go through one category at a time and transpose what you have left on the Brandstorm Worksheet to the Brand Blueprint. I recommend using complete sentences on your Final to help you fully think through the concepts. This is also a great time to add more adjectives to help further describe your brand. Here is an example of this process:

When you have finished, sit with this for a few days. Read back through your descriptions and visualize how this brand would look, feel and sound in application. A well-built brand is consistent across all elements of your business, so consider how the brand you have described will appear in the following:

  • Stationary (business cards)
  • Website
  • Social media
  • Packaging
  • Presentations
  • Print collateral (brochure, report, white paper)
  • Signage
  • Apparel

Now that you have organized your ideas into a Brand Blueprint, there are a couple different ways you may want to put this new tool into practice:

  1. Create or update your business plan to incorporate your Brand Blueprint.
  2. Share your Brand Blueprint with team members so they can better understand and represent your brand to customers.
  3. Use your Brand Blueprint to create your brand identity and guidelines.
  4. Reference your Brand Blueprint to develop marketing and communications campaigns.

Since you are probably already wearing a lot of (hard) hats for your business, you may want to consider working with an experienced freelancer to create your brand identity and communications campaigns. Guess what, I know someone who would love to help! We can walk through this whole process together.

If you are ready to take the next steps with your brand, I can support the strategy, design and copy of your brand identity. Depending on your needs, this would include logo and brand design, as well as a complete brand guide outlining best practices for your logo, colors, fonts, photos and graphics.
